Samuel Derringer Empty Samuel Derringer

Thu Jun 21, 2018 1:05 am

Samuel Derringer Skelli10

Baron Samuel Derringer
"Welcome to my abode. By all means...enjoy your stay."

The Biography

Birth Name: Samuel Derringer
Aliases: The Baron, Sammy D
Gender: Male
Age: Old.
Birth Day: October 22nd (First date in memory.)
Species/Race Name: Risen
Original Homeworld Name: Junction
Arcana: Empress
Place of Residence: Top Ward

Part/Full Time Job: N/A

Appearance: Make no bones with it - Samuel is a walking, talking, skeleton, standing 5'11" and adorned in finery. Steely grey hair runs out from his skull and down onto his shoulders, seeming to sprout organically from it despite the fact that really shouldn't be possible, and his 'eyes' consist of luminous, dark green irises that glow within his sockets. To complete the image, just add a top hat, his cane, and typically some sort of strange cigar that manages to stay secure in his jaw even while he talks.
Regardless of how one might think he ought appear, Samuel maintains a dignified bearing and a somewhat paternal presence, warm and welcoming in spite of his morbid visage. He can appear fatherly or lecherous, kindly or stern, but he never fails to make a point of carrying himself with dignity.

Personality: If anything stands out about Samuel other than his appearance, it's his persistently affable nature, consistently warm and friendly even in the face of a slight. He will give nearly all people his time should they simply ask it of him, and will happily drink and indulge with another even if he needs to provide himself. On top of it all, he has a predilection for aiding with the needs of others, bringing those in dire straits to the point of comfort with little assurance more than that it would be appreciated in turn.
He does his best to hold himself to the best standards he can, he avoids the garish and gaudy and other such things of distaste...and at all times, will treat others with courtesy so long as they do the same.
Samuel is a creature of indulgences, of each form, of every kind - but he is one who would have others indulge with him instead of revelling in excess.

The Potential

Strengths:

Strength Name: Garden Gift
Description: Samuel is not a creature of nature, or indeed, something that should really live under most understandings of how the bodies work. In many ways, he is akin to a living creature, and yet, he doesn't appears alive or operate on any known biological process. He is essentially a being of the supernatural, product of his old self and the natural environment he was first laid to rest in.
15% increase to Pmstr.

Strength Name: Shared Blessings
Description: Samuel developed something of a spirit of generosity in his current life, and a mindset that hoarding things to yourself diminishes their value compared to if they were shared with those appreciative. He has something of a giving soul, whatever form that might take.
Healing skills used by Samuel are 10% more effective.

Strength Name: Natural Presence
Description: Even as he is, a true sense of life seems to emanate from Samuel, a presence calming to those at home among nature. He appears to be at one with natural surroundings, and around him animals and plants seem to perk up a bit...if just a little.
Samuel has a 15% higher chance to inflict the Earth based ailments.

Strength Name: Purifying Influence
Description: Something about Samuel's current nature causes his body to automatically try to purge and heal anything that would defile him or alter his being. It is forceful, and painful, and utterly uncontrollable, causing a muddy flow of the responsible agent to pour from his body, but it has its benefits.
In combat, this means the first time Samuel exits Corruption, he is inflicted with Poison instead of a random ailment as his body attempts to counteract the side effects...this does produce a lot of slag, however.

Strength Name: Acquainted to All
Description: Before and after the start of his current life, Samuel made friends all around - largely with those among the upper class of Junction before, but there are many people all about that have some experience with him, be it a casual chat from time to time or a moment of favours exchanged. It affords him some familiarity and influence, and a general positive reception.

-----

Racial Strength Name: Earthbond
Description: When he was laid in the ground and brought back to the world, a connection was unearthed between him and it. New or old, it matters little at this point - the impact remains the same. They are connected, and they feed into each other.
Through the ground, Samuel can sense sources of vibration in a 5m radius around him, allowing him to pinpoint the location of things moving, taking action, or just not exactly being silent. Different surfaces can affect the range or precision of this, and powerful sources of vibration (be it a giant creature's footsteps, an earthquake, and generally a lot of things you don't want to be near) may give a rough impression of direction.

Similarly, Samuel can feed the energy for his healing skills into forming and energising the earth. When using them this way, he is essentially able to convert healing skills into damaging ones, trading the power of recovery for sheer force to direct against his foes.
Using this capability allows Samuel to cast healing skills on enemies, and have them do Earth damage of the same tier as the used skill instead of their normal effects. When doing so, bonuses and penalties that affect healing do not affect the performance of the skill - instead, only those that would affect a typical Earth skill do.

Main Racial Premise:

Weaknesses:

Weakness Name: Skeletal Frame
Description: As much as there are certain things you can do to mitigate it, it must be admitted that being an actual skeleton does come with disadvantages, one of the more notable being manipulating objects. You don't possess the same grip, for one, and generally things are designed to be handled by beings with bulk-adding flesh instead of one whose hands and bodies has a significant amount of empty space. Having things go through your hands if mishandled is irritating.
15% reduction to the Dx stat.

Weakness Name: Altered Mind
Description: Whatever happened between Samuel's initial demise and his awakening now caused his mind to be restructured, changing many facets of his personality along with affecting his memory and sensibilities. It left the landscape of his mind a little more responsive to outside influence than most.
Samuel takes 15% more damage from Psychokinetic attacks.

Weakness Name: Unreal Existence
Description: Not knowing who one once was, or if they will resurface,  and knowing that how you are now is not who you used to be. Knowing you should not exist the way you do now, and having no idea how to maintain your being - or even how you be at all. There's only so many questions you can put behind you, so many such thoughts that you can avoid before they start to shake you.
Samuel has a 15% higher chance to be inflicted with the Distress ailment.

Weakness Name: Agonising Purge
Description: Even if it has its benefits...the fact remains that any such purge is utterly agonising, and leaves remains. After a use of Corruption, or in any scenario where Samuel's body is attempting to purge something, he is subjected to brutal, searing pain throughout his body. This reduces his chances to hit by 10% as his ability to focus is impaired. In addition, any of the slag purged from his body remains extant in the environment, and may potentially retain any harmful properties it held.

Weakness Name: Lingering Remnants
Description: Before his death, Samuel was known for decadence, crudeness and boisterousness, and indulgence in the extreme. Even now, he remains rather indulgent. Nonetheless, regardless of who he is now, who he was before follows him, earning distaste from those who didn't approve of his old self, and alienating some of those who knew and loved the person he no longer is.

-----

Racial Weakness Name: Shock and Shudder
Description: The problem with being sensitive to vibration is that it effects you more than others. In general, Samuel doesn't handle shock well, susceptible to sudden and powerful vibrations nearby, and just sudden blunt impacts in general. Such things disorient him, briefly but intensely,  and shake his body.

When struck with a Strike attack, Samuel has a chance to be afflicted with Joint Lock as his bones jam and lock together, the ailment acting as a Strike based variant of Weight of Worlds. Area attacks have a 10% chance to cause this, and Single Target attacks have a 20% chance to inflict it.

Soul Bound Weapon:

Weapon Name: Fern
Weapon Description: An old, sturdy, 3 foot cane, well kept in the time it's been owned. Most of the body is a gloasy dark blue material, topped with a green, hexagonally faceted sphere.
Weapon Image:
Spoiler:
Weapon Attack Type: Strike
Weapon Element:  N/A

Side-Arm Weapon:

Side-Arm Name: Amaryllis
Side-Arm Description: An enamelled, nine shot revolver, the metal patterned by interweaving brass into it. Left over from his old life, it's one of a few possessions Samuel didn't deem tasteless enough to replace.
Side-Arm Image:
Spoiler:
Side-Arm Attack Type: Gun
Side-Arm Style: Revolver - Single Shot - Accuracy is increased by 20%. Consumes only one type of ammo per use. Can shoot only one enemy at a time.

The Background

History:

Samuel's eyes opened to naught but dirt as he laid on his back, surrounded by the dark beneath the ground. For a moment, he couldn't help but panic. Had he been buried alive? T'was this his grave?...He hoped not. They hadn't even given him a coffin to lie within.
He tried to move, and the soil gave easily. He pushed up with his arms, and light broke in. He sat up...and he found himself within a garden, ostentatious flowers arrangements and gaudy fixtures adorning the ground around him. The flowers were fine...but the rest was in really poor taste. Taking a better look, he found the garden belonged to a manor, and thought it best to inquire there why he was here.
Stretching out, he pushed himself up, only to note that his hands...weren't exactly human. He felt with them fine, they moved to his command, but there was no denying that all there was to them was bones...it was a fact he felt should have concerned him more, but it what he saw seemed perfectly natural.
Casting aside his questions for now, he took to his feet, and entered the manor.

Even now, that's the first day Samuel can remember. A curious way to start your life, to be certain.

A lot of what happened from there is a blur. The manor was apparently his, his last instructions being to bury him and wait for his return as he laid on his deathbed. Most of the staff were gone, but a few remained, introducing him to his assets and filling him in on who he once was. He...wasn't quite sure what to make of the fact his life before then had been one of reckless debauchery and excessive displays, but it at least explained some of the terrible, terrible decor choices.
At the very least, he'd made a lot of friends, and some solid hiring choices. He was eventually brought up to speed between the efforts of his staff and his old companions, and while a lot still eluded him...he adjusted. It took a while, but soon he was just as capable as he was before now. Perhaps more so.
He was different, for sure...but when that difference was having a greater sense of empathy and some actual taste, it was hard to complain.

That was a long, long time ago. In the intervening time, the manor had undergone a lot of redecorating in order to make it into something respectable. He himself had taken the time to acquaint himself with what he had and what was to be found in Junction. He lived well, moved on, and made a little of an effort to become a presence in the lives of others, be that as the affable fellow that would welcome you for a drink and a chat, or the uplifting hand for those grateful souls that had found themselves needy.
Whoever he had been before had certainly ensured he'd be well as who he was now, granting him blessings innumerable as he started his days.
He probably expected that he would live now as he had before...but there was greater pleasure in sharing these things with those appreciative than hoarding them to oneself.
